Introduction to Supply Chain and Logistics Management

There is so much to learn when it comes down to supply chain management and logistics. Is there a difference between the two? Why is it so important? We take it back to basics and break down the fundamentals to give anyone of any level the basic understanding of the industry and how to optimise your current processes to make the most of your network.

What is supply chain management?

Supply chain management, simply put, is the complete management of operations involved in the movement of goods. This includes the process of transforming raw materials into final products, the transportation of shipments containing these goods and the distribution to the end consumer. Good supply chain management ensures that these processes are all streamlined and maintains a good balance of supply and demand.

What is logistics?

Logistics is the general term used to describe the management of transportation, inventory, packaging, supplies and warehousing. It relates to a specific moment in the overall supply chain management process, referring only to how resources are acquired, stores and transported to their destination.

Now that you have grasped an understanding of that, we’re sure you’re asking yourself: Why is supply chain management so important?

Manufacturers and retailers heavily depend on an efficient supply chain to continue to be competitive in the market but having a thorough and effective strategy is just the beginning of a strong supply chain. By enhancing processes and streamlining every step, smarter supply chains can not only save a company heaps of money but also saves a company heaps of time. It’s important to stay adaptable and one of the ways to do this, is through technology.

Unsworth are continuing to innovate, it’s in our company values for a reason. We’re always on the move and always learning better ways to help our clients.
